TIMELINE OF JEWISH POPES AND JEWS THAT RULED THE CHRISTIAN EMPIRE
30 CE-64 CE: JEWISH POPE — St. Peter is clearly one of the most important figures in Christianity, but he was also a legendary figure among Jews, with a story spread among Medieval Jewry that Peter abandoned Christianity and returned to the religion of his ancestors before he died. In the early days of Christianity, the two religions were not so rigidly distinct. Early on, most Christians were gentiles or non-Jews, but had Semite DNA.
417 CE-418 CE: JEWISH POPE — Pope Zosimus was very likely a jewish pope based on records showing that he came from Greece, with a sizable Jewish population and his father was named Abram. Thessaloniki was heavily populated by Jews. Abram would have been an extremely unlikely name for a non-Jewish Greek.
761 CE-780 CE: KHAZAR BYZANTINE EMPEROR Leo IV or Leo the Khazar and his son Constantine VI were displayed on Byzantine coins and ruled for almost 20 strange years with tales of mothers having sons eyes burned out and being imprisoned in a tower on an isolated island. Leo the Khazar was succeeded by his son Constantine VI, who was eventually overthrown by Leo’s wife a Khazar, who installed herself as empress.
909 CE: THE JEWISH MADE UP FAKE JEWISH POPE — A Jewish story circulated was that Pope Andreas was the son of a rabbi and was kidnapped by Christians and reared as a wise and pious Christian cleric, eventually becoming pope. The Jews goon to claim Andreas calls a convection of cardinals in which he repudiates the Christian faith and rejects the divinity of Jesus. Then he throws himself off a tower and dies. There is however no historical account of any such pope.
1138 CE: JEWISH POPE — Anacletus II, (1130 CE-1138 CE), was born Pietro Pierleoni and was an Antipope who ruled in opposition to Pope Innocent II since a majority of cardinals did not accept Innocent’s election in 1130 CE and strangely elected Pierleoni as pope later the same day. Pietro was born to the powerful Roman family of the Pierleoni, the son of the Consul Pier Leoni. One of his great-great grandparents became rich and powerful and was a Jew who converted into Christianity. Pope Innocent II fled Rome and went north, where he gained powerful allies. When Anacletus II died in 1138 CE Pope Innocent II ruled and Anacletus II was branded antipope.
1200s CE-1600s CE: JEWISH POPES — The Medici were a powerful and influential Florentine family from the 13th to 17th century. They produced four popes who were related to the Medici and each other. #1 Pope Leo X (1475 CE–1521 CE), born Giovanni de’ Medici was Pope 1513 CE-1521 CE, #2 Pope Clement VII (1478 CE–1534 CE), born Giulio di Giuliano de’ Medici was Pope 1523 CE-1534 CE, #3 Pope Pius IV (1499 CE-1565 CE), born Giovanni Angelo Medici, was pope 1559 CE-1565 CE and was only distantly related to the other Medici Popes, #4 Pope Leo XI (1535 CE–1605 CE), born Alessandro Ottaviano de’ Medici, was pope in 1605.
1455 CE-1503 CE: JEWISH POPE — The House of Borgia was an Italo-Spanish noble family, which rose to prominence during the Italian Renaissance and were founded in 1455 CE. The Borgias became prominent in ecclesiastical and political affairs and produced two popes: Alfons de Borja, who ruled as Pope Callixtus III during 1455 CE-1458 CE, and Rodrigo Lanzol Borgia, as Pope Alexander VI, during 1492 CE-1503 CE. Especially during the reign of Alexander VI, he and his family were suspected of many crimes, including adultery, incest, simony, theft, bribery, and murder (especially murder by arsenic poisoning). Because of their grasping for power, they made enemies of the Medici, the Sforza, and the Dominican friar Savonarola, among others. Pope Alexander VI, was infamous for many reasons but one was that he and his family were Jewish and were often called Marranos which means Jewish converts to Christianity. This was shown by Pope Alexander VI friendliness to the Jews and allowed Jews expelled from Spain in 1492 CE to settle in Rome. Jews of the time circulated stories of Jewish conversos (convert) rising in the Church ranks to become Pope.
1492 CE: FEAR OF A JEWISH POPE — The expulsion of Jews from Spain by the Alhambra Decree in 1492 was accompanied by a mass conversion of Jews to Christianity. A fear arouse among many Christians that these crypto-Jews would rise in influence and gain authority in the Church, and destabilize Christianity. Thus the Spanish inquisition was formed to root out “secret Jews.”
2005 CE: JEWISH CARDINAL AND CONSIDERED FOR POPE — Aaron Lustiger, son of two Polish Jews who converted to Catholicism when he was 13 and baptized Jean-Marie Lustiger, rose up the ranks of the Catholic Church, eventually becoming cardinal. In 2005, after the death of Pope John Paul II, Cardinal Lustiger’s name came up as a potential candidate to succeed him. Ultimately Cardinal Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger was elected and became Pope Benedict XVI. Lustiger died in 2007 CE.
