Peace or Palestinian surrender? An interview with Norman Finkelstein by Tom Finn March 5, 2015 on Middle East Eye

FINKELSTEIN: In Gaza there HAS NEVER BEEN A PEACE PROCESS. There’s been an (ANNIHILIZATION) annexation process by Israel that uses the peace process as a facade or fig leaf to cover the annexation process.

FINKELSTEIN: PEACE in my lifetime. I’m not optimistic. I think Palestinians have lost the will to resist. I don’t fault them. People in Gaza now everyone wants to leave. Everyone wants out. In the West Bank it’s every man for himself. There’s no collective will anymore. The Israelis and the Americans succeeded. Palestine’s a very small place. If you have a lot of money, it’s a very easy way to neutralize any potential opposition. You neutralize them by creating NGOs and you suck up all the talent. They all go and live in Ramallah. I read the other day there are 10,000 NGOs in Palestine. Each one is made of three people, they have an office and a computer. Before you know it these people are earning 5, 10 times what a typical Palestinian earns, they get to travel and have a, relatively speaking, nice life.

FINKELSTEIN: Mahmoud Abbas and Palestinian Authority (PA) suits American and Israeli interests = No urgent desire to resolve the conflict = Abbas is an imbecile that gets to be VIP and quoted in NYT. What incentive do they have to end the occupation? They’re doing just fine.

Tom Finn (TF): So you’re saying you think ordinary Palestinians have given up?

FINKELSTEIN: I think they’re functioning at the level that is perfectly understandable of each looking out for themselves. I don’t fault them. There’s a lot of cynicism there about politics, they have an unusually corrupt leadership in Abbas. For any struggle to succeed the leadership has to have some commitment to the cause. The Palestinian leadership is nothing.

TF: Aren’t there other factors that could cause resentment?

FINKELSTEIN: The unending Israeli oppression, harassment, humiliation, it reaches a tipping point where Palestinians finally explode. but no leadership canonize or organize this explosion in a politically productive direction = It just fizzled out. There’s got to be a leadership.

FINKELSTEIN: I think this notion of a Hamas and a successful armed resistance is a fantasy. This idea that the only kind of resistance is armed resistance. There’s no successful armed resistance in Gaza. It’s been a complete disaster.

MORE COMPLETE SUMMARY

Finkelstein, son of holocaust survivors, Finkelstein was banned from entering Israel + Frozen out of US universities by DUCK-BAG Dershowitz.

FINKELSTEIN

Finkelstein = Expressed solidarity with Hezbollah

Finkelstein = Adherence to a two-state solution

Finkelstein = Criticize some elements in the Boycott Diversity and Sanctions (BDS) campaign

Finkelstein = Strong advocate for the Palestinian cause + Truth + Accuses Jewish charities of exploiting the Holocaust for monetary gain + Attacks Israel for oppressing the Palestinians

Finkelstein = Leon Wieseltier, New Republic, described Finkelstein as “poison: a disgusting self-hating Jew.” = SAME OLD NAME ISRAELI CALLING WHWN YOU HAVE NO FACTS.

Finkelstein = 2009 Documentary about his life = Conviction that Jews have a special obligation to ease the suffering of humanity.

Finkelstein = Latest book, Method and Madness, a close examination of the destruction visited on Gaza by Israel since 2008 = Israel’s assaults = Attempt to “re-establish regional deterrence” after Israel’s defeat in 2006 Lebanon war.

Finkelstein = Insisting Palestinians have legal and moral right to combat Israeli occupation BUT calls for mass non-violent resistance as the best means of defeating it.

Finkelstein = NF: I live in New York but I shuttle back and forth to Turkey where I teach international law at Sakarya University.

TF: Netanyahu speech to US congress Confronting Obama — Are American Jews, particularly democrats, distancing themselves from Israel?

NF: They’re distancing themselves from an obnoxious, Jewish-supremacist leader — Not Israel. [NOTE: IT IS BOTH SINCE 80% OF ISRAELIS SUPPORT MASS MURDERS OF PALESTINIANS]

TF: Has Netanyahu confronting Obama exposed the Israel lobby’s divisive role in US politics?

NF: Netanyahu = Authentic megalomania = He doesn’t care = He calls himself the representative of the Jewish people as if he’s King of the Jews.

NF: Even Senator Diane Feinstein, a senator who’s a fanatic supporter of Israel said ‘this guy is so arrogant’. to say he represents the Jewish people?

TF: Have your views on Hezbollah changed since they’re supporting Syrian President Assad?

NF: I don’t agree with a lot of what Hezbollah’s leader has done regarding Syria. Having said that I still regard him as being among the shrewdest political thinkers in the world today. He is careful, very thoughtful, very smart, disciplined, it’s hard not to respect that. But his stock plummeted when he aligned himself with Assad. It’s morally unacceptable to support Assad up until ISIS(L) are defeated, but not following that.

FINKELSTEIN: In Gaza there HAS NEVER BEEN A PEACE PROCESS. There’s been an (ANNIHILIZATION) annexation process by Israel that uses the peace process as a facade or fig leaf to cover the annexation process.

TF: In 2012 you called the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS) a campaign which has successfully pushed some American universities to divest from Israeli companies that violate international law “a cult.” Have your views changed since then?

NF: An interesting evolution of the BDS movement resulted in a recent resolutions passed at Stanford University and elsewhere trying to distant themselves from BDS. The Stanford resolution said we support Israel’s right to self-determination — I told them there’s no possibility you can win a broad audience if you claim you have no position on Israel.

NF: BDS have had many important victories. They’re tireless, resourceful, and well organised. They’ve had a real impact. Every BDS victory has been at the cost of the platform.

TF: How does the US view Iran today?

NF: As an important regional partner

TF: Does that indicate a shift in US policy?

NF: US always had regional partners = Until 1979 Iran was a regional partner. There are important US-IRAN common interests + Other pressures from Germany and Russia that want a deal with Iran = It’s not just Obama deciding.

NF: I visited Iran in April and everybody is hurting from the sanctions so there’s a mutual interest in resolving issues with USA and I don’t think Israel will have any say whatsoever. This is a serious US interest.

TF: You’re banned from Israel-Palestine. Do you expect you’ll ever be able to return to Palestine?

FINKELSTEIN: Probably not as I think the ban is eternal and I don’t think the conflict is going to be resolved in my lifetime.
