Iran–Contra = Irangate + Contragate + Iran–Contra scandal = A USA political scandal during Reagan 2nd term.

Iran–Contra = Senior officials secretly sold arms to Iran against an arms embargo to secure the release of several US hostages. Then use the money to fund the Contras in Nicaragua.

Iran–Contra = Under Boland Amendment = Funding the Contras had been prohibited by Congress.

Scandal began = Operation to free 7 American hostages held in Lebanon by a group with Iranian ties. Plan had Israel ship weapons to Iran, and then the USA would resupply Israel and receive the Israeli payment.

Iranians promised to do everything in their power to achieve the release of the U.S. hostages.

Iran–Contra = The plan deteriorated into an arms-for-hostages scheme, in which members of the executive branch sold weapons to Iran in exchange for the release of the American hostages.

Large modifications to the plan were devised by Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North of the National Security Council in late 1985, in which a portion of the proceeds from the weapon sales was diverted to fund anti-Sandinista and anti-communist rebels, or Contras, in Nicaragua.

Reagan = Supported the Contra cause but evidence he authorized the diversion of the money from Iranian arms sales to the Contras is disputed. Handwritten notes by Defense Secretary Weinberger on Dec 7, 1985, indicate Reagan was aware of potential hostage transfers with Iran, as well as the sale of Hawk and TOW missiles to “moderate elements” within that country.

Weinberger wrote Reagan “could answer to charges of illegality but couldn’t answer to the charge that ‘big strong President Reagan passed up a chance to free the hostages'”.

Weapon sales revealed Nov 1986 = Reagan a PROVEN LIAR — on TV stated weapons transfers occurred + But USA did not trade arms for hostages + Large volumes of documents relating to the scandal were destroyed.

Mar 1987 Reagan on TV took full responsibility actions he claimed he was unaware of including trading arms for hostages”.

Charges were brought against five individuals for their support of the Contras –later dropped because the administration refused to declassify certain documents — Conspirators faced various lesser charges and 14 Reagan administration officials were indicted = Including Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger.

11 convictions resulted — All pardoned in final days of the presidency of GHW Bush.

Israel 1984 = FUNDED Iran in Iran–Iraq war = NSA consultant got assistance from Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres in sale of arms to Iran — Designated Terrorists

Israel = Shipped weapons through an intermediary to the Islamic republic of Iran

USA reimburse Israel with the same weapons = WELFARE benefits.

1985 Reagan entered Bethesda Naval Hospital for colon cancer surgery and McFarlane met and told him Israel had contacted the NSA to pass on confidential information that Iranians sought to establish a quiet relationship with USA and offered to persuade the Hezbollah militants to release the seven U.S. hostages. REAGAN APPROVED.

Israel sold TOW antitank missiles to Iran with the United States reimbursing Israel.
