QUESTION: Progressive secular Jews in USA ask “how does a population that begins suffered from fascism, that normally inspires a Democratic response of antifascism, wind up with a society that is as racist as any place on earth. How did Israelis get from there to here?

HEVER: A stereotype about Jews was they were perceived as very weak and frail supporting human rights because they cannot defend themselves. Another stereotype says Jews are violent brutes that just want to kill Palestinians. We all grew up learning the story of the Holocaust and repeated often. This kind of dark side exists in all human beings.

HEVER: The Zionist movement has attracted some of the worst Jews around the world = Who want to use force to get more property and more land. + It also attracted very progressive people that were, unfortunately, sidelined by a very authoritative FEW who say Palestinians deserve NO rights. The Colonial Situation is dominated by fear that your servants around you might rise up against you at any moment. = Makes the left movement appear very weak – Wanting to help the natives be equal when the Jews are in constant fear if the servants rebelling and taking your property. The right-wing says we have to keep repressing those natives so they don’t rise up, in every way possible. In Colonial Israel that FEARFUL voice tends to win like it did in all Colonization.

FACT = The Left and Right in Israel both believed in a Jewish state. The Left wanted a Democratic Jewish state with better relations with the Palestinians having more rights = But the Natural outcome of a colonial, repressive state is Domination and Repression.

HEVER: The Holocaust made the Zionist movement very diverse = Jews went to Palestine because there was nowhere else to go = Many were Anti-colonial and less racist wanting a Democratic state VERSUS PRO-Colonial and PRO-RACIST who want FULL REPRESSION of the Palestinians.

HEVER: Models of how to decolonize = Algerian model + South African model. =
Algerian model terrorism was used on a very large scale against the Extremely Repressive French colonial regime. The French killed 100 Algerians for every French that was killed = A massive massacre – BUT in the end Algerians won — not a democracy or a very stable society as the leaders of the terrorist groups became the leaders of state. = LIKE ISRAEL but in Israel the level of violence was less versus 10% of Algerians were killed. The French colonial groups became even more racist and more violent in response to Algerian resistance and eventual win. In Israel attacks by Palestinians had no military chance of defeating the Israeli army – No ability to make a dent in the Israeli military might. They did make the Israeli government invest a lot of money in putting security guards everywhere, increasing the cost of living in Israel.
If Palestinians win and end a Jewish state as in Algeria, then will their leaders of the Resistance military groups become failed leaders of the new state – a very dark kind of future perhaps worse than the Racist Israeli Government.

South Africa had a lot of violence with terrorism, but they decided terrorism was secondary and put their efforts on the political struggle more.

Fortunately, the vast majority of Palestinians, including much of Hamas, decided that violence is not leading them where they want to go and Hamas announced a unilateral ceasefire 2004, but still believe that the military struggle is the way to go. The Fatah Party says they must abandon the military struggle and go through a diplomatic struggle. Together Hamas and Fatah have 50% support among the Palestinian public. The other 50% believe in a civil struggle.

FACT: In 2011-2012 hundreds of thousands of people were in the streets of Israeli cities protesting economic inequality in a Class Struggle — A Very Exciting Moment — against GOV economic policies after Dictator Mubarak fell and Dictator Assad and Dictator Bibi were NEXT to fall – a kind of breakthrough (Not about Palestinians). Then it just dissipated.

Organizers of these demonstrations are anti-occupation first and class struggle second = A very strong sense of disillusionment in Israel about the economy that the GOV and Media always say the economic situation is wonderful. But the international removal of Dictators did not affect Israel. People know their personal lives are awful expressed through the social media = Poor Wages + MASSIVE WEALTH AND INCOMES OF BILLIONAIRES AND MILLIONAIRES. And People started to wake up. But repressive political pressure (occupation of Palestinians) for security put aside the Removal of Bibi and dividing the movement and the demonstrations dissipated = GOAL OF RIGHT WING Divide and Conquer = Argued the demonstrators wanted to END the Occupation giving rights to Palestinians and only pretend to care about INEQUALITY AND COST OF LIVING. = KILLED the question: Why is the cost of living in Israel so much higher than in any country in Europe? = ISRAEL SPENDS PROPORTIONATELY MORE ON SECURITY (% of GDP) than any NATION in developed World – Near DOUBLE THE USA and MOST ISRAELIS do NOT know this as GOV + MEDIA covers it up. = But when Israel joined the OECD (organization of developed economies) the TRUTH was UNCOVERED in a Graph that anyone can see clearly that Israel has the lowest proportion of its GDP spent on civilian expenditure + BUT expenditure on MILITARY & SECURITY is EXTRAORDINARILY HIGH = GOV argues it is ’cause look who’s surrounding us.’ = Netanyahu used that to try to disperse the demonstrations +used an attack in the south of Israel to declare Gaza did it and he bombed Gaza and killed four people but the attack had nothing to do with Gaza and Hamas decided not to retaliate with rockets LIKE Bibi wanted = Hamas wanted to keep the focus on the INEQUALITY SOCIAL PROTESTS and NOT fall into Bibi’s TRAP. Shows a very deep level of Hamas understanding as protesters held signs: “we will not be sidetracked by the security argument.” Hamas refused to play Bibi’s GAME. But nevertheless the demonstrations faded as THEIR MESSAGE WAS TOO VAGUE = “People Demand social justice” without defining who the people are = “Palestinian citizens of Israel” + “Palestinians were never mind the occupied territories. Palestinian citizens of Israel internally displaced wanted their right of return to “our lands” confiscated illegally = Israeli GOV immediately rejected.

FACT: RACISM is EXTREME among the majority of Israeli citizens and they support the onslaught on Gaza, repression, and the killing of women and children by targeting civilian areas. = Opinion polls show a majority of Israelis were for it.

A Palestinian “happy-go-lucky very young woman in a refugee camp in Beirut when asked “What would you say to young Israeli Jews?” = Suddenly her face got very stern and she said, “Tell them I want to strangle them with my bare hands…Cause I saw pictures that when they were bombing Gaza, kids were going up and signing their names on the bombs so that they could have their name on a bomb that fell on…Palestinian children in Gaza.” = We saw them do it on television. But many Palestinians never say that sort of thing even though there is a lot of anger, especially in Gaza a prison situation and they never have a chance to see Israelis anymore except TROOPS. Many Palestinian children grow up not knowing what a NON-MILITARY Jewish person looks like, but most Palestinians are very politically sophisticated and are a lot more aware generalizations don’t always work.

HEVER: Some Israelis were sickening with the 2008 attack on Gaza but 90% of Jewish Israelis supported the attack on Gaza, but OVER 50% REFUSE to join the INVASION ARMY + REFUSE to shouldering the costs of these CRIMES = The Goldstone Report + the BDS movement caused a lot of Israelis to say we have to be careful to not kill so many innocent people. Yet in elections Israelis vote for the most right-wing, crazy party and Bibi, but REFUSE to PARTICIPATE IN THE ACTUAL MUDERS OF PALESTINIANS. Most young Israelis say they’d rather live somewhere besides Israel but while stuck there they support nationalism and root for the HOME team as if it is a sporting game where people lose their lives.

HEVER: As the Military Industrial Complex collapsed in the 1990s Israel suffered a deep social change with immigrants from the former USSR integrated into mainly the high-tech sector, which was growing very fast as Israel demilitarized in many ways. + There was a kind of hope from the Oslo negotiations that The Occupation would END = Spurred international corporations to start investing in Israeli NON-MILITARY economy + Consumer economy was going to grow and flourish. SOON PROVEN FALSE with the Year 2000 and the Second Intifada of Palestinians against the Israeli occupation + 9ll in USA caused the MILITARY-REPRESSION INDUSTRY TO SURGE. Many question what caused what. HEVER: Israel is extremely dependent on the US and West so we must present the image of a liberal democracy for One group in Israel has freedom of speech = My special group (male, white, Jewish, Ashkenazi) = I was able to write what I wanted to write and say what I wanted to say without being harassed by the authorities. My father’s family escaped to the Soviet Union and lived pretty harsh years during the war and then my father’s part of the family chose to go to Palestine.

JAY: During the ’20s and the ’30s progressive Jews around the world wrote stories of factories that had been purchased by Jews would take over the factory and fire all the Palestinians.

My parents supported, during the 1990s, the Oslo process = A coalition between Yitzhak Rabin (Labor Party) and Meretz (liberal party for human rights, but a Zionist party) that negotiated with Yasser Arafat = Completely undemocratic policies of 400 people members of the Hamas Party deported without a trial. = My parents and I as a teen had a crisis of faith and stop supporting Zionism as no longer acceptable. My parents never went to Palestinians as such a privilege would be on the bayonets of the Israeli army. We will however go to a separate Palestinian state as tourists. = We believe the opposite of most of Israeli Society. It would be easier to be on that side just and play the privileged game – regular career path. But after I decided not to go into the army (BIG DECISION) and after I decided to go to university, I experienced something that changed my mind. I was lucky to be do this when Netanyahu just became prime minister and was extremely bombastic so a lot of people started doubting the good sense of going into the army. = It was relatively easy to get out even though I went to a very militaristic school. In my entire school there was nobody who even contemplated not going into the army = Wasn’t possible = Nobody decided not to go to the army. = So I did volunteer work for year in an impoverished town of Israel called Sderot = And during that year in Sderot, I saw other aspects of the Israeli society. And that’s when I decided I’m not going into the army and instead I’m going to university directly.

As I was starting my bachelor’s in 2000, the Second Intifada (a very strong reaction to Ariel Sharon’s Occupation Policies and violation of a Mosque caused an uprising of Palestinians) started = A group of students and professors in Tel Aviv University brought witnesses from the occupied territory to say what’s going on during the intifada = Not in newspapers = It was possible then but today it’s no longer possible. = World Health Organization said that the water in Gaza was not fit for human beings to drink = Intifada soon started = NOT JUST RELIGION BUT QUALITY OF LIFE and the economy + the standard of living that caused great frustration of Palestinians as Oslo process failed them. = Israeli newspapers made it seem like Israel was being very generous and willing to negotiate, when in fact my mother, working for the government, brought home documents about WATER ALLOCATION + LAND ALLOCATION = SO UNFAIR to Palestinians = Created Second Intifada that was repressed with extreme violence by the Israeli military and Israeli police. = I felt that even living in Israel is becoming unbearable for me. Immediate tendency is to compare it with the ’30s in Germany = Overt racism is became OK = Israelis dropped the pretense being emphatic. I became politically activeand join various joint-struggle (Jews and Palestinian) organizations = Demonstrations + Became more aware of my privileges and responsibility in society = Working for social justice.

QUESTION: How does a people who have suffered so much from racism and repression and a people that have such a history all over the world of fighting for progressive ideals, how does it end up a society which seems on the whole to be contrary to all of those progressive ideals?

EU COMPLICIT = RTP explains that the EU and its member states were aware that some forms of assistance to Israel contributed or would perforce contribute to certain wrongful acts committed by Israel = SUPPLYING military equipment to ISRAEL that has maintained an illegal occupation for more than forty years + Evidence of repression = Reports by EU officials to EU bodies listing violations accurately = Ignored by those bodies + “contributed significantly to the wrongful acts committed by Israel” + “In these cases, the EU may be held to have been complicit in the wrongful act committed by Israel and hence to incur responsibility,” the RTP Tribunal emphasized.

EU COMPLICIT = Participation of Israeli settlements in European research programs + Failure of the EU to complain during the “Cast Lead” operation about the destruction by Israel of infrastructure that the EU had funded in Gaza + INCREASED bilateral relations between the EU and Israel = Assistance to Israel in its alleged violations of international law + “Provide a form of security for Israel’s policy and encourage it to violate international law because they cast the EU and its member states in the role of approving spectators.” + “The silence of the EU and its member states seems like tacit approval or a sign of acceptance of violations of international law by Israel,” the RTP (Russel) Tribunal judged.

EU COMPLICIT = “As it is inconceivable that the EU and its member states are unaware of the violations of international law being committed by Israel,” the RTP concludes that the acts in question constitute wrongful assistance to Israel within the meaning of aforementioned article 16 of the UN-International Law Commission draft articles on state responsibility.
