Noam Chomsky most recent book is called Gaza in Crisis: Reflections on Israel’s War Against the Palestinians published in November of 2010.
PAUL JAY, SENIOR EDITOR, TRNN: You’ve done a lot of work on what’s going on in the Middle East. You’ve been there recently. What’s your take?
NOAM CHOMSKY, PROF. LINGUISTICS, MIT: Core problem is the Israel-Palestine issue. This problem happens to be uniquely easy to solve — It’s been on the table for 35 years and virtually the entire world supports it. The only holdouts are the United States and Israel.

CHOMSKY: Europe + Non-Aligned countries + Arab states + Organization of Islamic States, including Iran — all agree on a political settlement on the internationally recognized border — The so-called Green Line, pre-’67 borders, with two states, a Israeli state and a Palestinian state in the occupied territories, and possibly some adjustment of the border.
USA SUPPORTS ENDLESS ENDLESS DELAYS OF THE TWOTHE TWO STATE SOLUTION THUS THUS ALLOWING ISRAEL TO ROB THE MOST VALUABLE LANDS IN PALESTINE IN PALESTINE:
CHOMSKY: A ceasefire line was understood. The USA called for moderate and mutual border adjustments. That was actually brought to the Security Council in January 1976. The US vetoed it. Again in 1980 it was–. I won’t run through the whole record, but it’s basically a record of US refusal to accept it. Of course Israel refuses. They want to take over as much as is valuable to them of the occupied territories.
CHOMSKY: On one occasion the US came close to accepting it the TWO-STATE SOLUTION — the TWO-STATE SOLUTION — In January 2001, Clinton’s last month in office, Clinton provided what he called “parameters” for settlement. Both sides accept them, as he pointed out. They met for a week in Taba, Egypt, tried to work out the details, and they apparently came pretty close to a settlement.
JAY: While in the Middle East recently we talked to a lot of Palestinians on both sides of the border–the blockage was originally the split between Hamas and Fatah and also Israel’s current leadership and elitists have no interest in 2 states as Israel continues the land robbery and the mass murders of Palestinians.
CHOMSKY: Some background, since the early ’90s, the USA and Israel have been working to try to separate the Gaza Strip from the West Bank and now they’re almost totally separated — A student in Gaza cannot go to university in the West Bank. If somebody wants to go for medical treatment in a Palestinian hospital in East Jerusalem which isn’t available in the Gaza Strip, it’s essentially blocked, primarily by Israel but also partly by (ISRAELI OWNED) Palestinian Authority and Hamas.
CHOMSKY: So Separation of Gaza and West Bank is NEARLY COMPLETE. In 1980s Israel just wants to get rid of the Gaza Strip — and it has devastated Gaza and wanted to hand it over to Egypt. In January 2006 there was a free election in Palestine, first one in the Arab world, carefully monitored — But it was an USA-Israeli Backfire as Hamas won the election. In the typical disdain for free elections if they don’t come out the right way, the USA, and of course Israel, instantly turn to harsh punishment of the population for the crime of voting the wrong way. Sadly, Europe as usual trailed along timidly.
CHOMSKY: In June 2007, the USA and Israel tried to carry out a military coup to overthrow the results of the election in Gaza. It didn’t work. It was beaten back, and Hamas took over. And at that point sanctions became much harsher. And now we hear the PROPAGANDA that Hamas by force took over the Gaza Strip — beating back a US-Israeli planned military coup initiative. Hamas-Fatah runs the Gaza Strip and PLO-Fatah runs all remaining West Bank that ISRAELIS HAVE NOT ROBBED pretty harshly, and with international support.
CHOMSKY: The split is there, Hamas runs the Gaza Strip; Fatah-PLO run the West Bank = USA + ISRAELI were very happy as they continue to ROB LAND for Israelis settlement to further SPLIT the areas and PREVENT a TWO-STATE SOLUTION.
CHOMSKY: January 2001 is not that far back and things have not changed much. Yet a two-state solution is still feasible, if the USA shifted its policy — But USA is basically blocking it by providing decisive military, economic, diplomatic, and ideological support for the Israeli takeover. The ideology is the way it’s propagandized and presented in USA, EU, and Israel.
CHOMSKY: Sadly by now Israel’s illegal settlements occupy 40+% of the Palestinian territory. The other 60% is called Area C controlled by the Israeli army. It’s not necessary.
JAY: When I was in the West Bank and in refugee camps in Beirut and Lebanon, a lot of Palestinians were saying they thought that the two-state solution is dead, and that there’s–really is one state, and then they’re all living under the same one state. It’s just that only Jews get to vote and Palestinians don’t. The issue now is that there should be a movement, one person, one vote, and that people, the Palestinians and Jews that want a democratic state, should simply take over the one state that’s theirs.
CHOMSKY: Personally, I’ve been in favor of that since the 1940s. But it’s pie in the sky. And they’re omitting the fact–this is a common discussion on both sides and in the world, and it’s just omitting an elementary fact.
CHOMSKY: There are three alternatives:
#1 Alternative is the international consensus on two states. #2 Alternative live together in a one state TRUE DEMOCRACY. #3 Alternative is the one USA’s-ISRAELIS’s have implemented = USA and Israel continue to take LAND within one state — everybody lives together UNDER ISRAELI DOMINATION AND APARTHEID PRISON
ISRAELI ROBBERY CONTINUES TO EXPAND UNDER ILLEGAL SHARON PLAN THAT VIOLATES INTERNATIONAL LAWS:
CHOMSKY: Israelis have separating Gaza from the West Bank = Decisive support for programs called the Sharon Plan = Take over whatever you want in the West Bank-Behind separation wall = Basically annexation of all arable land, water resources, the pleasant suburbs of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv and support the completely illegal expansion of Jerusalem that’s not only in violation of international law but even the direct, explicit Security Council resolutions, which the US indeed voted for.
CHOMSKY: The whole occupation-settlement program is illegal, BUT Israel in 1967 said, we’re going to do it anyway. The world has universal agreement that Israelis are VIOLATING INTERNATIONAL LAWS. The USA is blocking ALL ENFORCEMENT USING UN VETO POWER.
CHOMSKY: ISRAELIS are taking over what’s valuable by hugely expanding Jerusalem to everything behind the separation wall, the annexation wall, the Jordan Valley, which imprisons everything else. Israelis huge highways, huge infrastructure, and settlements are making a couple of salient cuts to the land to essentially (SPLIT) cantonize the rest. You can now drive from Tel Aviv to the easternmost towns, like Ma’ale Adumim or Ariel, without ever seeing a Palestinian. Palestinians are cut off into the hills somewhere — NEVER TO BE SEEN — THE #3 ISRAELIS ALTERNATIVE.
CHOMSKY: If there isn’t a two-state settlement, then the #3 DOMINATION ALTERNATIVE IS THE USA-ISRAELI PLAN = ZERO DEMOCRACY FOR PALESTINIANS WITH NO RIGHTS = APARTHEID LIKE SOUTH AFRICA. THERE IS NO WORLD SUPPORT FOR A ONE-STATE REAL DEMOCRACY.
CHOMSKY: South Africa people forget the decades of struggle to get the world to oppose apartheid. Only when USA changed positions in the late 1980s did the world support ending Apartheid. Reagan violated congressional sanctions in 1988 condeming Mandela’s African National Congress, as one of the more notorious terrorist groups in the world.
JAY: Do you see any potential for a change in US position, and to some extent a change in US public opinion?
CHOMSKY: Oh, there’s a substantial change in US public opinion. I used to need police protection just to talk about these issues. But now there’s huge engaged audiences. The BDS movement against Israel –boycott-sanctions-divestment program — is substantial supported by the OUTRAGED American public. If the public knew that Obama made a commitment to Israel to provide them with $30 Billion of military aid over the next decade they would be OUTRAGED. In fact, many people in USA are talking about outrageous USA military budget.
CHOMSKY: Most Americans don’t want to hand it over $30 MORE BILLION to Israel like Obama did. But the MSM and Obama prevent the mobilization of this already existing and striking public opinion.
CHOMSKY: Israelis strongest support is in the media + WALL STREET + Most extreme support for Israeli expansion and aggression is the far right + The Wall Street Journal + The New York Times + GOP, the party of big business + Democrats on the PAYROLL of AIPAC-WALL STREET + MIC + EVEN SOME OTHER HIGH TECH that benefit from endless war + Lockheed Martin + BOEING = Delighted when we give Israel funds to buy advanced MURDER aircraft and so on.
CHOMSKY: ISRAELIS base of support is MULTINATIONAL WAR-PROFITEERS and WAR FINANCIERS-BANKSTERS = Policies set right at the core of the USA OWNERSHIP system — Substantial intimidating, super-rich influential lobbyists guided by these more fundamental sources of support.
CHOMSKY: It’s not currently what the public wants. And that needs to be changed.
CLEARLY IF THE AMERICAN PUBLIC WERE IN CONTROL ALL AID TO ISREAL WOULD BE TERMINATED AND ISRAEL WOULD BE BOYCOTTED AND SANCTIONED AND COMPLETELY DIVESTED UNTIL PALESTINE BECOMES A HEALTHY FREE NATION WITH ADEQUATE FINANCIAL AND MILITARY SUPPORT!
