Zbigniew Brzezinski born 1928 in Warsaw Poland in a family of nobility — coat of arms covering Berzeżany in Galicia to eastern Poland — Now Ukraine. Brzezinski grew up witnessing the rise of the Nazis. In 1939, an agreement allowed Nazi Germany and USSR powers to invaded Poland. In 1938 his father, Tadeusz Brzeziński, was posted to Canada. He attended Loyola High School in Montreal and McGill University in 1945 for Bachelor and M.A. in 1949-1950 — Master’s thesis focused on the various nationalities within the Soviet Union. 1945 Yalta agreement between the Allies allotted Poland to the Soviet sphere of influence, meaning Brzezinski’s family could not safely return to their country — Profound effect on Brzezinski: “extraordinary violence perpetrated against Poland…made me…(realize) world politics is a fundamental struggle.”

Brzezinski wanted a diplomatic career in Canada but was ruled ineligible for a scholarship because was NOT a British subject. Brzezinski attended Harvard (1953) for a doctorate focusing on USSR October Revolution and Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin. He met in Munich with Jan Nowak-Jezioranski, head of the Polish desk of Radio Free Europe and collaborated with Carl J. Friedrich to develop the concept of totalitarianism as a way to more accurately and powerfully characterize and criticize the Soviets in 1956.

1956 Brzezinski encouraged dissidents in Eastern Europe to fight off Russia in order to undermine the influence of the Soviet Union. Brzezinski at Harvard argued against President Eisenhower’s plan that pushed Eastern Europe further toward Russia. He wanted Polish protests and Hungarian Revolution in 1956 to encourage Eastern Europeans to fight Russia. In 1957, he visited Poland for the first time since he left as a child, and reaffirmed the split within the Eastern bloc he called “peaceful engagement.”

In 1958 he became a United States citizen. Despite his decades in Canada and the presence of family members there, he never became a Canadian citizen.

1959 Brzezinski was DENIED TENURE at Harvard, so he moved NYC to teach at Columbia University. Here wrote “Soviet Bloc: Unity and Conflict” focusing on Eastern Europe in Cold War and taught future Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and mentored her during her early years in Washington.

As a member of the Council on Foreign Relations in New York ha also joined the Bilderberg Group.
