Emanuel intends to spend $55 million of CHICAGO property tax dollars to build a hotel and basketball arena on the near-south side – timing for his grandiose plan  came about a week before his school board appointees vote on closing 54 POOR schools – opposed by students, parents, teachers, and Chicago Public Schools’ own hearing officers – who consider the plan wasteful, hasty, unwise, counterproductive, and dangerous.

Protesters took to the streets in the hopes that angry demonstrations will accomplish what crying, begging, pleading, and reasonable argument haven’t: convince the mayor to change his mind, but Emanuel could care less.

As broke as Chicago is Emanuel still found $55 million lying around to buy up some land and hand it over to private entities that don’t need it.

EMANUEL’S BACKGROUND

Rahm Israel Emanuel Chicago’s first Jewish mayor. His father is a Jerusalem-born pediatrician who was a member of the Irgun, a Jewish paramilitary organization operating in Palestine.

He joined Bill Clinton’s Administration in 1993 as the Assistant to the President for Political Affairs and as Senior Advisor to the President for Policy and Strategy before resigning in 1998.

Investment Banker from 1998 to 2002 and served on the board of directors of Freddie Mac.

In 2002, Emanuel entered U.S. House of Representatives from 2003 to 2009.

2008 he joined Obama as White House Chief of Staff to 2010.

He became Chicago’s Mayor in 2011.

Emanuel and his brothers attended summer camp in Israel, including the summer following the June 1967 Six-Day War.

Emanuel was a civilian volunteer assisting the Israel Defense Forces for a short time during the 1991 Gulf War, repairing truck brakes.

Christie’s Supreme Court Packing with His GOP Judges – TO PRIVATIZE EDUCATION = VIOLATES THE CONSTITUTION AND SEPARATION OF POWERS

NJ Constitution = Requires STATE GOV to offer a “thorough and efficient” education for all of the state’s school-age children.

NJ Supreme Court ruled (1973) this obligation was not satisfied by a school-funding system that relied primarily on local property tax revenue. = Discriminated against students in urban districts with fewer resources. = Court ordering more funding from the state for the poorer districts. GOP criticized the court for “actively enforcing the STATE CONSTITUTION.”

Finally resolved AND THEN ALONG CAME CHRISTIE!

Gov. Christie (R) first budget slashed funding for URBAN education = SUPREME COURT ruled that these cuts violated the state constitution, and reimposed its remedial order for more funding for the poorer schools. = CHRISTIE Cuts were “real, substantial, and consequential blow to the right to the achievement of a thorough and efficient system of education.”

Christie responded by arguing the court should not “determine what programs the state should and should not be funding,” despite the language in the state constitution. Chrustie pledged to “reshape” the court (FOR GOP) and in 2010 threw a respected justice off the bench by denying him tenure. = NEVER INTENDED AS A POWER OF THE GOVERNOR! = Violated traditions that ensured high court’s independence.
