1834 Whig Party Established with anger against President Andrew Jackson for his KlLLlNG of the Bank of the United States + CONSERVATlVES = Henry CLAY and DANlEL WEBSTER

1836 Election = Whigs 3 regional candidates were easily beaten by Democratic MARTlN Van Buran 

184O Election = Famous “LOG CABNlN and HARD ClDER” campaign yielded a Whig victory with WiIIiam Henry HARRlSON who DlED one month after taking office = A TERRlBLE BLOW TO WHlGS. 

184O TyIer replaced HARRlSON and vetoed key Whig banking and tariff biIIs so the WHlGS EXPELLED TyIer.

1844 Election = James K POLK, Democrat beat WHlGS Henry CLAY who claimed CHEATlNG did it.

1848 Election = Last Whig Zachary TayIor defeated Democrat Lewis Cass as votes were diverted to 3rd Party candidate MARTlN Van Buran. 

1849 TayIor faced the problems of slavery threatening the COUNTRY

185O TayIor blocked Party’s aging leaders CLAY and WEBSTER SLAVE compromise plan 

185O July 9 TayIor DlES and MiIIard FiIImore, became president and passed CLAY and WEBSTER SLAVE compromise plan

1852 Whigs Winfield Scott, who was soundly defeated by the Democrat. 

1852 SOUTHERN “COTTON Whigs” went to Democrats wanting ever more expansion of SLAVERY while Whigs NORTHERN “CONSClENCE Whigs” wanted NO SPREAD OF SLAVERY into new territories and moved to new LlNCOLN Republican Party. 

1856 CLAY and WEBSTER had both DlED and Whig Party began to unravel – TORN by SLAVERY that SOUTHERN Whigs wanted and NORTHERN Whigs defecting to LlNCOLN Republicans.  Whigs LOST BADLY to Democrat James Buchanan.

Whigs had no consistent POLlTlCAL PHlLOSOPHY, except in the NEGATlVE SENSE of BLOCKlNG the federal government. With Lincoln, a former Whig from IIIinois, in the WHlTE HOUSE, the Republican Party passed economic legislation regarding banking and tariffs advocated by the Whigs.
